Six period myths that just aren't true
It's time to set the record straight when it comes to periods and the many myths surrounding them.
When it comes to menstruation, knowledge truly is power.
With so many rumours, misinformation and sometimes just pure lies, it can be difficult, especially for young girls, to feel comfortable and confident when it comes to that time of the month.
That's why it's so important to provide young women and girls with the right education that sets the record straight and puts those myths to bed! By doing so, we can empower the next generation to navigate their periods with confidence, celebrate their bodies, and break free from the chains of misinformation.
Six period myths
Myth 1: You can't go swimming during your period
Let's kick things off with a classic misconception: the belief that swimming during your period is a big no-no. Well, guess what? It's absolutely not true! With the right period product in place, whether it's a tampon, menstrual cup, or period swimwear, you can dive right into the pool without any worries.
Water won't flush out your period, and nobody will even know you're menstruating. So, jump in and make a splash!
Myth 2: PMS is just a myth
Ah, the dreaded PMS (premenstrual syndrome). Some people believe it's just an excuse for mood swings and chocolate cravings. But take it from us, PMS is very much real. Many menstruators experience a range of physical and emotional symptoms in the days leading up to their period.
From bloating and breast tenderness to irritability and fatigue, PMS can vary in intensity and duration from person to person. So, if you're feeling a little off before Aunt Flo arrives, know you're not alone.
Myth 3: You shouldn't exercise during your period
Many believe you should hang up your trainers and skip the gym during your period. In reality, exercise can actually help alleviate menstrual cramps, boost your mood, and increase endorphin levels.
So, go ahead and lace up those shoes, whether it's a gentle yoga session, a dance class, or a sweaty cardio workout. Just listen to your body and do what feels good for you. Periods don't need to put a halt to your fitness routine!
Myth 4: You can't get pregnant during your period
Time to tackle a misconception that might lead to some unintended surprises: the belief that you can't get pregnant if you have sex during your period.
While the chances of getting pregnant during your period are lower, it's not impossible. Sperm can survive inside your body for up to five days, so if you have a shorter cycle or irregular periods, there's a possibility you could ovulate soon after your period ends. Remember, contraception is essential if you're not trying to conceive.
Myth 5: Period blood is dirty or impure
Let's banish this age-old myth once and for all: period blood is not dirty or impure. It's a natural bodily function that helps your body shed the uterine lining. Menstrual blood is a combination of blood, tissue, and other fluids, and it's perfectly normal. There's no need to feel ashamed or grossed out by it.
Myth 6: Periods are embarrassing
Let’s face it, women have a long history of battling the idea that periods and menstruation are shameful and embarrassing. Would you believe it wasn’t until 1985 that the word period was even mentioned on television (shoutout to Courtney Cox).
Periods shouldn’t be something we talk about in secret and try to hide, after all, half the population deals with them on a monthly basis. Let’s join together and work to end this stigma to improve the experience of womanhood and our changing bodies for everyone!
So, with all those myths debunked, you can go forward knowing you’re not alone in this menstruation journey, and can swiftly shut down any rumours and misconceptions you hear flying around.
